You Don't Need to Know the Whole Plan

There are seasons in life when you know God is doing something, but you don't know exactly what He is doing.

You can sense that something is changing.

A door has closed.
A new opportunity may be appearing.
Your priorities are shifting.
God may be calling you into unfamiliar territory.

But there is one problem:

You cannot see the whole picture.

And that can be uncomfortable.

We often want God to give us the entire plan before we take the first step.

We want to know where we are going, how we will get there, who will be involved, what will happen along the way and exactly when everything will come together.

But God doesn't always reveal the whole journey.

Sometimes He simply says:

“Trust Me.”

GOD DOESN'T ASK YOU TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING

One of the most familiar passages of Scripture says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Notice what the Scripture says:

“Lean not unto thine own understanding.”

God isn't saying that understanding is wrong.

He is reminding us that our understanding is limited.

We see today.

God sees tomorrow.

We see one piece.

God sees the entire picture.

We see the situation.

God sees the purpose.

That's why trusting God is so important.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SEE THE WHOLE ROAD

Imagine driving at night.

Your headlights don't illuminate the entire road ahead.

They simply give you enough light to see the next section.

Yet you keep driving.

Why?

Because you trust that the road continues beyond what you can currently see.

Faith works in a similar way.

God may not show you the next five years.

He may not even show you the next five months.

Sometimes He gives you enough light for the next step.

And when you take that step, He gives you light for the next one.

You don't need to see everything to obey God.

You simply need to trust Him with what you cannot see.

ABRAHAM HAD TO TRUST GOD

Abraham is one of the clearest examples of trusting God without knowing the whole plan.

God told him:

“Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:”
 Genesis 12:1 (KJV)

Notice something important.

God didn't give Abraham the complete address before asking him to leave.

He said:

“Unto a land that I will shew thee.”

Abraham had to move before he knew everything.

That is faith.

Sometimes God says:

“Move.”

And we respond:

“But where?”

God says:

“Trust Me.”

We ask:

“But how?”

And God says:

“Trust Me.”

We ask:

“When?”

And again:

“Trust Me.”

GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU CANNOT SEE

There may be things happening behind the scenes that you know nothing about.

God may be preparing people.

Opening opportunities.

Closing wrong doors.

Changing circumstances.

Developing your character.

Protecting you from things you cannot see.

Preparing you for something you are not yet ready to carry.

You may look at your life and think:

“Nothing is happening.”

But heaven may be working on your behalf.

Never assume that because you cannot see movement, God is not moving.

God can be working in places you cannot see.

JOSEPH COULD NOT SEE THE END OF HIS STORY

Joseph received a dream from God, but his journey didn't immediately look like the fulfilment of that dream.

Instead, he experienced betrayal.

He was thrown into a pit.

He was sold into slavery.

He was falsely accused.

He went to prison.

If Joseph had judged God's faithfulness by one chapter, he might have concluded that the dream was impossible.

But God was still working.

Eventually, Joseph's circumstances changed dramatically.

He went from the prison to the palace.

And when he finally understood more of God's purpose, he was able to say to his brothers:

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”
Genesis 50:20 (KJV).

Joseph couldn't see the whole plan while he was in the pit.

But God could.

YOUR CURRENT CHAPTER IS NOT THE WHOLE STORY

Perhaps you're looking at something in your life right now and wondering:

“Why is this happening?”

You may not understand it.

You may not like it.

You may wish things were different.

But don't allow one chapter to convince you that the entire story is finished.

Joseph's prison was not his final destination.

David's wilderness was not his final destination.

Moses' wilderness years were not his final destination.

And your current circumstances do not have to be your final destination either.

God is still writing.

SOMETIMES FAITH MEANS WALKING WITHOUT ALL THE ANSWERS

We often think faith means believing that everything will work out exactly as we want.

But biblical faith goes deeper.

Faith says:

“Even if I don't understand, I will trust God.”

“Even if I cannot see, I will follow.”

“Even if the answer takes longer than I expected, I will remain faithful.”

“Even if the door I wanted closes, I will trust God's wisdom.”

That's mature faith.

Faith isn't the absence of questions.

It's choosing to trust God while you have questions.

STOP TRYING TO CONTROL WHAT ONLY GOD CAN HANDLE

Sometimes our anxiety comes from trying to control things that were never ours to control.

We cannot control what people think.

We cannot control every outcome.

We cannot control tomorrow.

We cannot control how quickly certain prayers are answered.

We cannot control every change that comes into our lives.

But we can control our response.

We can pray.

We can obey.

We can prepare.

We can remain faithful.

And then we can place the outcome in God's hands.

Trust requires surrender.

GOD'S “NOT YET” DOESN'T MEAN “NEVER”

Perhaps you've been praying for something for a long time.

You have asked.

You have waited.

You have believed.

And still, you don't have the answer.

Don't automatically interpret God's silence as rejection.

Sometimes God is saying:

“Not yet.”

There is a difference between “not yet” and “never.”

God's timing is not always our timing.

The Bible says:

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” 
Habakkuk 2:3 (KJV).

There is an appointed time.

Keep trusting.

WHAT IF GOD IS ASKING YOU TO TRUST HIM MORE THAN YOUR PLAN?

We all have plans.

We have ideas about where we should be.

We imagine how our lives should unfold.

But sometimes God's plan takes us somewhere completely unexpected.

And when that happens, we have a choice:

Hold tightly to our own plan—or surrender to God's direction.

Proverbs 16:9 says:

“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (KJV).

Make your plans.

Dream.

Prepare.

Work.

But leave room for God to redirect your steps.

Because His vision is greater than ours.

WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, PRAY

There will be moments when you genuinely don't know what decision to make.

Don't panic.

Pray.

Ask God for wisdom.

James 1:5 says:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

You don't have to figure everything out alone.

God is not irritated by your questions.

He invites you to seek Him.

Before making a major decision, pause and ask:

“Lord, what are You saying?”

“Lord, what should I do?”

“Lord, close the door if this isn't Your will.”

“Lord, give me peace to move when You say move.”

PEACE CAN COME BEFORE THE ANSWER

Sometimes we think we need an answer before we can have peace.

But God can give you peace while you're still waiting for the answer.

You may not know what tomorrow holds.

But you can know Who holds tomorrow.

You may not know how everything will work out.

But you can trust the One who is already working.

You may not know which door will open.

But you can trust the One who holds the keys.

You don't need all the answers to have peace.

WHAT DOES TRUSTING GOD LOOK LIKE?

1. Pray before you panic

When uncertainty comes, make prayer your first response.

2. Obey what God has already shown you

You don't need a new revelation if God has already given you clear direction.

3. Stop demanding the whole picture

Be willing to walk by faith, one step at a time.

4. Don't allow fear to make your decisions

Fear wants you to rush.

Faith allows you to wait for God's direction.

5. Remember God's faithfulness

Look back at what God has already done.

His past faithfulness gives you reason to trust Him with your future.

6. Keep moving when God says move

Trust isn't passive.

When God gives you direction, take the step.

YOU ARE SAFE IN GOD'S HANDS

Perhaps today you are standing at a crossroads.

You don't know what is next.

You don't know which decision to make.

You don't know how a situation will resolve itself.

But you can pray:

“Lord, I don't know what is ahead, but I trust You.”

That simple prayer can change your perspective.

You don't have to carry the weight of knowing everything.

God already knows.

A WORD FOR THE WOMAN WHO IS WAITING

If you are waiting for an answer today, don't lose heart.

If you're waiting for a new opportunity, trust God.

If you're waiting for direction, seek Him.

If you're waiting for restoration, remain hopeful.

If you're waiting for a breakthrough, don't abandon your faith.

If you're standing at the beginning of a new season and you're afraid, remember:

You don't have to know everything that is ahead.

You just need to know that God is ahead of you.

A PRAYER OF TRUST

Oh My Heavenly Father,

I thank You because You know the beginning, the middle and the end.

Lord, there are things in my life that I don't understand.

There are situations I cannot control.

There are questions I cannot answer.

But today, I choose to trust You.

Help me not to lean on my own understanding.

When I cannot see the way forward, guide my steps.

When I am tempted to worry, remind me that You are already in my tomorrow.

When I want to rush ahead, teach me to wait.

When I am afraid to move, give me courage.

When I don't understand what You are doing, help me trust Your heart.

Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction and courage to obey it.

I surrender my plans, my timing, my fears and my future into Your hands.

I may not know what tomorrow holds, but I know that You hold tomorrow.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

A FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Dear woman of virtue, you don't have to know the whole plan.

You don't have to understand every delay.

You don't have to know how every situation will work out.

You don't have to see the entire road before you take the next step.

Trust God.

He sees what you cannot see.

He knows what you cannot know.

He understands what you cannot understand.

And He is able to lead you exactly where He wants you to go.

So breathe.

Pray.

Listen.

Trust.

And take the next step.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (KJV).

You don't need to know the whole plan when you know the One who holds the plan.
