When God Closes One Door and Opens Another

There are seasons in life when something comes to an end and we don't understand why.

A door closes.

A relationship changes.

An opportunity disappears.

A familiar season comes to an end.

Something you thought would last forever suddenly looks completely different.

And sometimes, you find yourself asking:

“God, why did You allow this to happen?”

But what if the ending you are grieving is actually making room for something God has already prepared?

What if the closed door isn't punishment?

What if it is preparation?

What if God is making room for something new?

GOD CAN DO A NEW THING

God says:

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
Isaiah 43:18–19 (KJV)

God was speaking to His people about something new that He was going to do.

Notice the words:

“I will do a new thing.”

God is not limited to what He has done before.

He can create a new opportunity.

He can open a new door.

He can give you a new assignment.

He can restore your joy.

He can take you into a season you never imagined.

Sometimes we become so attached to what God did yesterday that we struggle to recognize what He is doing today.

SOMETIMES GOD HAS TO CLOSE A DOOR

We don't usually celebrate closed doors.

We celebrate open ones.

But not every open door is God's door, and not every closed door is a bad thing.

Sometimes God closes a door because He knows what is on the other side.

You may have prayed:

“Lord, please open this door.”

And instead, the door closed.

You may have been disappointed.

You may have cried.

You may have questioned God.

But later, you discovered that the closed door protected you from something you couldn't see.

God sees beyond the door.

He knows what you don't know.

And sometimes His “no” is protecting your future.

DON'T KEEP KNOCKING ON A DOOR GOD HAS CLOSED

There is a difference between perseverance and refusing to accept God's direction.

We have just talked about not giving up, but that doesn't mean we should keep forcing something God is telling us to release.

There are moments when faith means continuing.

And there are moments when faith means letting go.

Ask God for discernment.

“Lord, is this something You want me to keep pursuing, or is it something You want me to release?”

That prayer can change everything.

Because sometimes we are exhausted not because God asked us to keep going, but because we are trying to keep something alive that God has already finished.

LET GO OF WHAT GOD HAS TOLD YOU TO RELEASE

Letting go doesn't mean you don't care.

It doesn't mean the season wasn't important.

It doesn't mean the people didn't matter.

It simply means you trust God enough to release what is no longer part of where He is taking you.

The Apostle Paul said:

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”
Philippians 3:13 (KJV)

Paul understood something important:

You cannot reach forward while constantly holding onto yesterday.

There comes a time when you have to say:

“Thank You, Lord, for what was, but I'm ready for what is next.”

GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOUR STORY

Perhaps your current chapter doesn't look anything like you expected.

Maybe you thought you would be further ahead by now.

Maybe you imagined your life would look completely different.

But your current circumstances do not mean God has abandoned His purpose for you.

Remember Joseph.

His life went from the pit, to slavery, to prison, and eventually to the palace.

There were chapters Joseph could not have understood while he was living them.

But God was working through every one.

What looked like setbacks were actually part of the journey toward God's purpose.

Your present situation is not the complete story.

A NEW SEASON MAY FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE

We often pray for change and then become uncomfortable when change actually comes.

A new season requires new faith.

New responsibilities may require new wisdom.

New opportunities may require you to leave familiar places.

And sometimes God will ask you to step away from what feels comfortable.

Think about Abraham.

God told him:

“Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:”
Genesis 12:1 (KJV)

Abraham had to leave what he knew before he could walk into what God had promised.

Sometimes the next season requires you to leave the previous one.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE UNKNOWN

One of the biggest reasons we struggle with new seasons is because we cannot see what is ahead.

But you don't have to see the entire road.

You only need to trust the One who knows the road.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

God doesn't ask you to understand everything.

He asks you to trust Him.

You may not know where the next chapter will take you.

But God does.

MAKE ROOM FOR WHAT GOD IS DOING

Sometimes making room means changing your mindset.

Sometimes it means releasing fear.

Sometimes it means forgiving.

Sometimes it means leaving behind old habits.

Sometimes it means making time for prayer again.

Sometimes it means preparing yourself for the opportunity you've been praying for.

You cannot fill a container that refuses to release what is already inside.

And sometimes God is saying:

“Make room.”

Make room for growth.

Make room for healing.

Make room for purpose.

Make room for new relationships.

Make room for new opportunities.

Make room for what I am about to do.

YOUR NEXT CHAPTER MAY LOOK DIFFERENT

Don't expect God to repeat the previous chapter exactly.

The next season may not look like the last one.

And that's okay.

God's blessings don't always arrive in the packaging we expect.

Perhaps the new thing will look different.

Perhaps the opportunity will come through a different person.

Perhaps the ministry assignment will change.

Perhaps your priorities will change.

Perhaps God will take you somewhere you never expected to go.

Don't reject something simply because it doesn't look like what you imagined.

Stay sensitive to God.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO FORCE YOUR FUTURE

You don't have to manipulate circumstances.

You don't have to chase every opportunity.

You don't have to prove yourself to everyone.

You don't have to force people to stay.

You don't have to force doors open.

When God is in something, He is able to make a way.

The Bible says:

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”
Psalm 37:23 (KJV)

Your responsibility is to follow Him.

His responsibility is to lead you.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN A SEASON OF CHANGE?

1. Pray for discernment

Ask God to show you what to hold onto and what to release.

2. Don't live in yesterday

Be grateful for what God has done, but remain open to what He is doing now.

3. Prepare yourself

If you are praying for a new season, begin preparing for it.

4. Don't rush

Not every opportunity is God's opportunity.

Wait for His direction.

5. Trust God's timing

You don't need to force what God has already ordained.

6. Step forward when God says move

Faith isn't just believing.

Sometimes faith means taking the next step.

IF GOD IS CLOSING A DOOR, DON'T BE AFRAID

Maybe a door has recently closed in your life.

Maybe you're grieving something you thought would continue.

Maybe you don't understand why God allowed something to end.

Take heart.

The closed door may not be the end.

It may simply be the beginning of a different chapter.

God knows what He is doing.

And although you may not understand the transition today, one day you may look back and say:

“Now I understand why God didn't let me stay there.”

THERE IS SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL ABOUT A NEW BEGINNING

A new beginning gives you permission to believe again.

To dream again.

To hope again.

To pray again.

To rise again.

To walk again.

To trust again.

Perhaps you've experienced disappointment.

Perhaps you've made mistakes.

Perhaps you've lost time.

But God is not intimidated by your past.

He is still able to write beautiful chapters.

Your story is still being written.

A PRAYER FOR YOUR NEW SEASON

Oh Heavenly Father,

Thank You because You are the God who makes all things new.

Lord, help me to recognize when You are bringing a season to an end and preparing me for something new.

Give me the courage to release what You have told me to release.

Help me not to keep holding onto yesterday when You are calling me into tomorrow.

Give me discernment to recognize the doors You are opening and the wisdom to walk away from the doors You have closed.

Heal my heart from disappointments connected to the past.

Restore my hope.

Renew my faith.

Prepare me for everything You have ahead of me.

When I cannot see the way forward, help me trust You.

When I feel afraid of the unknown, remind me that You already know the way.

Lord, make room in my heart, my mind and my life for everything You desire to do.

And when You say, “Behold, I will do a new thing,” help me to recognize it and have the courage to step into it.

In Jesus' mighty name,

A FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Dear woman of virtue, don't be afraid of a new season.

Don't spend so much time mourning what has ended that you miss what God is beginning.

Some doors closed because God was protecting you.

Some seasons ended because God was preparing you.

Some things had to be released because there was no room for them in the next chapter.

And perhaps today God is saying to you:

“Let it go. Trust Me. I am doing something new.”

You may not see it yet.

You may not understand it yet.

But keep trusting.

Keep praying.

Keep preparing.

Keep walking.

Because the God who brought you through your last season is already waiting for you in the next one.

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
Isaiah 43:19 (KJV)

Your past is not your prison.
Your present is not your permanent place.
And your future is still in God's hands.
