Knowing When to Let Go of the Past and Embrace What God Has Ahead
📖 Isaiah 43:18–19 (KJV)
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
Introduction
There comes a time in our lives when God says, “It’s time to move forward.”
Not because the past didn't matter.
Not because what happened didn't hurt.
But because your past was never meant to become your permanent address.
Perhaps you've spent years thinking about what went wrong, who hurt you, opportunities you missed, or decisions you wish you could change.
Maybe you've become comfortable looking backwards because the future feels uncertain.
But what if God is saying:
“My daughter, there is still more ahead of you.”
You Cannot Move Forward While Constantly Looking Back
Imagine trying to drive a car while constantly looking through the rear-view mirror.
You might see where you've been, but you won't clearly see where you're going.
Sometimes we do the same thing spiritually.
We keep revisiting yesterday while God is preparing us for tomorrow.
Yes, learn from the past.
Yes, acknowledge what happened.
Yes, allow God to heal your wounds.
But don't allow yesterday to control your tomorrow.
Your past can be part of your testimony without becoming your identity.
God Is Doing a New Thing
Isaiah 43:19 says:
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth…”
Notice that God says “new thing.”
God is not limited to repeating what He has already done.
He can give you a new beginning.
A new opportunity.
A new assignment.
A new season.
A new level of purpose.
Sometimes we miss what God is doing because we're so focused on what He did before.
Don't become so attached to your previous season that you cannot recognise your new one.
Let Go of What God Is Asking You to Release
Moving forward sometimes requires letting go.
You may need to release:
The disappointment.
The bitterness.
The fear.
The regret.
The relationship that God has told you to leave behind.
The version of yourself that no longer reflects who God is calling you to become.
Letting go doesn't mean that what happened didn't matter.
It means you're choosing not to allow it to control the rest of your life.
Forgiveness doesn't always mean forgetting.
Sometimes forgiveness means saying:
“I refuse to carry this pain into the next season God has prepared for me.”
Peter Had to Leave the Boat
Peter experienced an extraordinary moment when Jesus called him to walk on water.
He had to step out of the boat.
Think about that.
The boat represented what was familiar.
The water represented the unknown.
But Jesus was calling Peter beyond what he already knew.
Sometimes God calls us to step away from what is comfortable and trust Him in unfamiliar territory.
You may not know exactly what lies ahead.
But you know Who is calling you forward.
Don't Let Fear Keep You Stuck
One of the biggest reasons people remain stuck is fear.
“What if I fail again?”
“What if it doesn't work?”
“What if people laugh at me?”
“What if I'm too old?”
“What if I've missed my opportunity?”
But God is not asking you to predict the future.
He is asking you to trust Him with it.
You don't need to have everything figured out before you take the next step.
Sometimes obedience begins with simply saying:
“Lord, I trust You. Lead me.”
Your Age Does Not Cancel God's Purpose
This is especially important for women who may feel that their best years are behind them.
You may look at your age and think:
"Surely it's too late for me."
But God is not restricted by your age.
Abraham was called into a significant season of his life when he was already advanced in age.
Moses was eighty when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt.
So never say:
“It's too late for God to use me.”
If God still has breath in you, He can still have purpose for you.
Your next chapter may look completely different from your previous one.
And that's okay.
You Don't Need Permission From Your Past
Your past may remind you of your failures.
But God sees your potential.
Your past may tell you what you cannot do.
But God tells you what He can do through you.
Your past may say, “You failed.”
God says, “Get back up.”
Your past may say, “It's over.”
God says, “I'm doing a new thing.”
Don't allow an old chapter to convince you that the book is finished.
God is still writing.
How Do You Know It's Time to Move Forward?
Sometimes moving forward begins with a quiet conviction in your heart that you cannot remain where you are.
You may sense God calling you to:
Forgive someone.
Leave an unhealthy situation.
Start something new.
Return to something He previously placed on your heart.
Step into ministry or service.
Stop allowing fear to control your decisions.
Finally believe that you are worthy of a new beginning.
You don't have to know everything.
Ask God for wisdom.
Seek His Word.
Pray.
Listen.
Then take the step He gives you.
Your Next Chapter Doesn't Have to Look Like Your Last
Perhaps your previous chapter was filled with pain.
That doesn't mean the next one will be.
Perhaps you experienced rejection.
That doesn't mean you will always be rejected.
Perhaps you lost something precious.
That doesn't mean God cannot restore you.
Perhaps you made mistakes.
That doesn't mean your purpose has been cancelled.
God specialises in new beginnings.
Your story is not defined by your worst moment.
It is defined by the God who is still writing it.
Don't Be Afraid of the New
New seasons can be exciting, but they can also be uncomfortable.
You may have to learn new things.
Meet new people.
Enter unfamiliar places.
Take risks.
Trust God in ways you've never had to trust Him before.
But remember:
The unfamiliar does not mean God isn't in it.
Sometimes the very place that scares you is the place where you will discover another dimension of God's purpose for your life.
It's Time to Move Forward
My sister, if you've been standing at the doorway of your next season, wondering whether you should step through, perhaps today is your confirmation.
It's time to move forward.
Leave yesterday where it belongs.
Take the lessons.
Keep the testimony.
Release the pain.
And walk into what God has ahead.
You don't need to know the entire journey.
You just need to trust the One who is leading you.
Final Encouragement
The chapter that hurt you is not the end of your story.
The opportunity you missed is not necessarily the end.
The mistake you made is not the end.
The season you struggled through is not the end.
God is still writing.
And perhaps the next chapter will reveal why He needed you to let go of the previous one.
So lift your head.
Dry your tears.
Release what you cannot change.
Take God's hand.
And move forward.
There is still purpose ahead of you.
There is still work to do.
There are still lives to impact.
There are still prayers to pray.
There are still dreams God can breathe life into.
And there are still chapters waiting to be written.
When God says, “Move forward,” don't let fear make you stay behind.
Prayer:
Oh Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that our past does not have to determine our future.
Lord, help us to release every disappointment, regret, hurt and fear that is holding us back.
Give us the courage to move forward when You say it is time.
Heal the places in our hearts that still hurt, and give us wisdom to recognise the new things You are doing.
Help us not to compare our journey with anyone else's.
Give us courage to step into unfamiliar places, knowing that You are already there.
For every woman who feels that her best days are behind her, remind her that You still have purpose for her life.
Let her know that it is never too late for You to write a new chapter.
Order our steps.
Strengthen our faith.
And help us walk boldly into everything You have prepared for us.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
🌷 A Final Word of Encouragement
Don't let your past become a prison.
Take the lessons, leave the pain, and trust God with what comes next.
Your past is a chapter. It is not your whole story.
Perhaps today is the day you finally turn the page.
It's time to move forward. ❤️🙏🏽
